Personal development doesn’t come from reading theory only; rather the practical application is vital. This understanding can be reflected by the increasing number of university courses which include a compulsory work placement.
There are a number of opportunities on how we can develop ourselves during university so below are just a few ideas.
1. Student Societies: Join and aim to become committee members.
- Cultural
- Religious
- Debating
- Environmental
- Academic
- Sports
2. Internationalise the Malaysian Society: Use Malaysian societies to the maximum.
- Collaborate with non-Malaysian student societies so Malaysians interact with different cultures and pick-up a variety of skills.
- Use the culture of discussion as a common culture between Malaysian societies and other societies.
3. Student Politics: Run or actively promote student politics.
- Student Representative.
- NUS Delegate.
- Black Students Delegate.
4. On-Line Forums and Chat Rooms: Develop at your own pace.
- Participate in forums that are ‘non-Malaysian’ to develop thinking and communication skills at your personal pace.
- Internet chat rooms are excellent channels of communication development prior to face-to-face communication.
5. Personal Interaction: Go outside of the Malaysian community
- Make an effort to befriend those outside of the Malay race.
- Interact personally with other university cultural societies.
6. Voluntary work: Experience a taste of working life
- Gain experience in team work.
- Develop your skills in communication in a less-pressure environment than the professional environment.
- If you are recognised to be competent in the developed world, you can be sure that there are skills, understanding and expertise that you can bring back to Malaysia which Malaysian society will benefit from.
